A very good day for Naperville Central turned into a nightmare for Joliet Catholic.
Tournament MVP Megan McMahon had 18 assists, Emily McGee had 10 kills, and Rebecca Heath added six kills and six digs as No. 2 Naperville Central (29-4) defeated Joliet Catholic 25-17, 25-18 to win the 16th annual Autumnfest Tournament at Glenbard East.
‘‘I’m quitting before the postseason because it can only go down from here,’’ joked Naperville Central coach Brie Isaacson after her team won its second major tournament title in two weeks.
‘‘What I’m seeing after 33 games is consistency. Before, if we got down three or four points, we’d go into panic mode. But now, we keep our composure. We don’t try to get it all back at one time. We’re patient.’’
McMahon, who missed three weeks following an appendectomy, said familiarity is breeding success.
‘‘Each time we play together, we get better,’’ McMahon said. ‘‘We’re molding as a team. But we have to go day by day, get back into the gym and work harder.’’
Joliet Catholic coach Chris Scheibe watched two of her starters go down with knee injuries Saturday. Sophomore Annemarie Hickey sprained her right knee in a semifinal win over Rockton Hononegah. Senior Brianna Fleener suffered what appeared to be a more serious left knee injury in the championship match.
‘‘Losing I can deal with but losing two players?’’ Scheibe said. ‘‘I didn’t see Brianna go down. We just didn’t have enough to compete with [Naperville Central].’’
Kelly Murphy had 17 kills and 13 assists for No. 5 Joliet Catholic (29-4).
