Munster making
NCC race interesting

Munster crept one match closer to Andrean for the Northwest Crossroads Conference lead on Thursday, winning in three games against the 59ers.

The Mustangs’ victory was payback for their five-game loss against Andrean on Sept. 6. Munster has three conference matches remaining against Highland, Hobart and Kankakee Valley.

Munster coach Tracy Afman said her team (20-5, 7-2) stepped up its play in several different facets of the game and that proved to be the difference on Thursday.

“We just improved on some of the things we didn’t execute well on last time,” Afman said. “We came out fired up and we just worked on blocking fundamentals. Our defense was phenomenal that game and when you are doing the little things right, everything came together.”

Leading the way for the Mustangs was Shannon Farrell, who recorded 12 kills, Elizabeth Kloos, who recorded four kills and Caley Mintz, who tallied four kills and six blocks.

Afman said her team stepped up against the 59ers’ Taylor Mullin, who finished with 12 kills, on Thursday night. Mullin had 27 kills in the previous win against Munster.

“A lot of our girls have bought into the game plan,” Afman said. “We lost a lot of our starting players from last year’s team but I have pleasantly surprised with how we are playing of late. I’m happy with our team’s improvement and how coachable these girls are. I still see us improving when we get to sectionals and that’s exciting.”

Player of the Week

Setter Jamie Rogalski led the Mustangs to wins over Portage, Chesterton and Andrean last week. She recorded 13 assists in the win over the 59ers and 21 assists in the win over the Indians.
