MUNSTER — Players on the Munster girls basketball team vowed to win their game against Hobart if the coaches danced as part of a Wii game at its Thursday night meal.
The coaches obliged.
And so did the Mustangs.
Munster pulled out a 49-46 overtime win against Hobart on Friday night. The Mustangs (4-3, 2-0 Northwest Crossroads Conference) ended a three-game losing streak to the Brickies (4-4, 0-2), having last won during the 2007-08 season.
“It’s huge for us,” Munster coach Matt Backs said. “Big win for us.
“We battled all the way. I’m so proud of the girls.”
Aleks Obradovic scored 17 points for Munster, including five in overtime. The senior center completed a three-point play off an offensive rebound for the first points of OT, snapping a 43-43 tie with 3:33 left. She added another basket off an offensive rebound to give the Mustangs a 48-45 edge with 1:32 left.
Alyssa Sheets made the first of two free throws with 29.6 seconds left to give Munster a 49-46 lead. Hobart then missed a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer, before committing a turnover.
After Lauren Grunewald missed two free throws with 7.2 seconds left, Morgan Flaharty’s potential tying 3-pointer as time expired caromed off the backboard, the rim and out.
“Hobart’s a great team,” said Backs, whose team next plays at Lowell next Friday. “They gave us all we could handle. It’s nice to keep winning in conference. Hopefully it’s a springboard, and it shows the girls what they’re capable of.”
Anika Gasich had 15 points for Munster, missing a contested 3-pointer as time expired in regulation with the score tied at 43-43.
Grayce Roach led Hobart with 15 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter and overtime, and Flaharty added 11.
The Mustangs scored the game’s first five points, before the Brickies took a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sheets hit a 3-pointer, her second of the first half as she provided a spark off the bench, with three seconds left to give Munster a 23-22 halftime lead.
