Mundelein High rewrote the boys golf page of its school record book on Monday.

The Mustangs won their first-ever team title at the prestigious Lake County Invitational golf tournament and a member of the champs became the first Mundelein golfer to be medalist.

So it went on Monday at challenging Shepherd’s Crook Golf Course in Zion.

Mundelein first a four-man, 18-hole team score of 301 — one shot better than state-power Lake Forest, and seven clear of third-place Stevenson.

The Mustangs were led to victory by junior Grant Heelan, who fired an even-par 71 to top Libertyville’s Alex Quenan and Lake Forest’s Charlie Marshall by a shot.

“I hit the ball straight which, on this course, is important,” said Heelan. “The greens were very hard and it was hard to stop the ball. You have to manage it like a links course.”

Also scoring for Mundelein were Brett Cigelnik (76), Dave Kruger (76), and Brady Witt (78).

“We knew we had some guys who could score,” said Todd Parola, coach of the new champs. “Boy oh boy! It’s a nice win for the kids.”

Besides Marshall, also scoring for Lake Forest were Ian Mankoff (74), Corben Heizer (78) and Jack Barrie (78).

Parola praised the play of Heelan, a veteran of varsity competition even though he’s only a junior.

“He’s been one of our best golfers for three years,” the coach said. “He’s very solid and hopefully, he can continue to play well.”

Ironically, Heeland said he’d been struggling on the course in recent weeks.

“We’re very surprised (to win the team title), but we had four guys who stepped up and played well,” he added.

Vernon Hills finished fourth, a great showing for a smaller school.
