Lake Zurich scores early, often

Lake Zurich scored on its first four possessions of the game to take a quick lead and defeat Mundelein, 35-7, in Lake Zurich. Quarterback Zach Till (7-for-14) threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

"Our line was giving me a lot of time," said Till. "We put a lot of play-action passes in the game plan and everyone ran them well."

On the Bears' first possession, Till connected with Tim Sayre for a 63-yard touchdown pass to get the No. 25 Bears' offense started. Mike Shield (54 yards on 12 carries) scored on a six-yard run, Mark Dorfman caught a 21-yard pass from Till and tight end Mike Schnur (two receptions for 102 yards), a converted right guard, took a 64-yard strike from Till to give the Bears (7-1) a commanding 28-0 lead at the half.

"The first play was a streak down the middle," said Till. "We knew that was either going to be a big play or it's not going to happen. (Sayre) was right there. We're pretty confident. Everyone likes playing with each other."

In the third quarter, the Mustangs (0-8) showed some life. Bobby Mendel blocked a Bears' punt into the end zone for a touchdown to put the Mustangs on the scoreboard 28-7.

The Bears' Peter Papastratakos intercepted quarterback Gable Leppert's (4-for-8 and 88 yards) pass at the Mundelein 15-yard line and ran the ball to the 4-yard line where Shield ran it in for his second touchdown of the game to close out the scoring.

Mike Rantis ran for 24 yards on seven carries and Zach Johnson ran for 31 yards on five carries for the Bears. The Bears' defense held the Mustangs offense to 47 yards rushing for the game and had three sacks and three interceptions.

Brian Grant had three receptions for 82 yards and ran for 22 yards on four carries for the Mustangs. Grant also threw a pass for 28 yards.
