Romeoville's defense turns back Assisi

Romeoville used solid defense to defeat Mount Assisi 54-36 Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans (13-4) forced 13 first-half turnovers in taking a 29-15 lead into the intermission.

"Today we were outplayed," said Mount Assisi coach Julio Mendoza, whose team fell to 5-12. "They showed more effort, and we played a weak game. I thought we were mentally prepared for this contest, but by the number of turnovers we had, I do not think so."

The Eagles were led by Shay Michel, who scored all 11 of her points in the second half.

Mount Assisi scored the first basket of the game to take its only lead. Romeoville then outscored the Eagles 17-6 for the remainder of the quarter.

"Our defense has been solid, but we are not satisfied at where we are and we still need to work on positioning," Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. "All the girls were able to play tonight, which was nice. The whole team contributed to this win."

Romeoville forced 14 Mount Assisi turnovers in the second half.

"Now if we could only convert on those steals more consistently it would improve our game," Carrasco said.

Romeoville was led by Kierra Curie with 14 points. Abby Smith added 13.
