Mount Carmel standout quarterback Jordan Lynch has been selected for the first-ever USA Football Junior National Team.
The team, which consists of players nominated by high school and college coaches from across the country, will take part in the inaugural American Football Junior World Championship.
Teams from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Sweden all qualified for the competition, which is from June 27 to July 5 in Canton, Ohio.
Lynch, a 2008 Sun-Times All-Area team selection and a Northern Illinois signee, led the Caravan to the Class 8A semifinals as a senior. He also won the Tony Lawless Award as the Catholic League’s MVP.
The 6-1, 205-pound Lynch is projected as a potential safety in college. He was the only player from Illinois selected for the squad, which will ultimately consist of 45 players that 19 years old or younger.
Mount Carmel coach Frank Lenti, who has led the Caravan to nine state championships and four second-place finishes, will be an assistant for Team USA. Chuck Kyle of Cleveland St. Ignatius will be the team’s head coach.
