With Jerron Wilbut missing his second game due to suspension, Downers Grove South once again needed someone to step up.
Friday night it was Jordan Cannon against Hinsdale South. Saturday night, Kevin Honn came up big against Morton with the 57-46 West Suburban Gold win in front of the home crowd.
With No. 16 Downers South (15-4, 6-1) holding on to a 37-26 lead heading into the fourth period, Honn lifted his game to another level and scored 12 of his 23 points.
His basket with 3:10 left in the game was his ninth of the period and gave the Mustangs a 48-34 lead. The play demonstrated what makes Honn a dominating scorer. He used power to get past the first defender, speed to get past the second, and quick thinking to switch the ball from his left hand to his right to avoid the third defender and convert the pretty finger roll off the glass.
“We just have a lot of scorers,” Honn said of playing without Wilbut. “We have a lot of weapons and on any given night, a guy can stand up and play well. Jerron scores a lot, but even without him, we can still score.
Honn also scored eight points in the first period.
Jamall Millison was another player who stepped up for his team when it needed him most. Millison got the offense moving again in the third period, with Downers South clinging on to a slim 22-16 lead. It was his passing that really added a spark. With 5:00 left in the period, he drove to the basket and drew a double-team before dishing the ball off to a wide open Robert Mara, who scored and was fouled.
On Downers’ next possession, he found Tre Simmons (eight points) in rythm for a jumper that made it 30-19 in favor of Downers South, its biggest lead of the game. After a Morton turnover, he buried a three from the left elbow to make it 33-21 in favor of Downers South with 4:30 left in the period.
“They put me in a box and one defense, so I tried to get my teammates involved. Everybody is there to score and I wanted to get them all involved,” said Millison.
Morton (9-8, 4-3) was led by Waller Perez’s 17 points.
