A solid 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, Mount Carmel’s Brandon Greer is a running back built to take hits on the field.

The senior running back does not have to rely solely on his power, though. Scoring two long rushing touchdowns of 24 and 54 yards untouched, Greer helped the Caravan score early and often in Friday’s 31-0 victory over Morgan Park at Gately Stadium.

“We didn’t want to make it close,” Greer said. “We had a good week of practice so we came out hard and physical to get the job done.”

Greer finished with 86 rushing yards on just three carries, scoring twice in the game’s opening minutes.

“[Brandon] sets the tone,” Mount Carmel defensive lineman Vontrell Williams said. “It brings out the confidence in us.”

Also contributing for No. 3 Mount Carmel (2-0) were Draco Smith (15 carries, 68 yards), Matt Domer (13 carries, 55 yards, touchdown) and quarterback Don Butkus (7-for-10, 112 yards, passing touchdown).

Morgan Park had just two first-half first downs as the Mustangs offense went three-and-out on its opening four possessions.

“We were trying to swarm the ball,” Mount Carmel linebacker Derrick Bryant Jr. said. “We wanted to come out aggressive and play hard and mean.”

Morgan Park quarterback Andre Newell was harassed to the tune of 6-for-20 passing for 123 yards while also gaining 22 yards on five carries. No other Mustang gained more than 10 rushing yards in the game.

Morgan Park fell to 0-2.
