Allen Rashee said his team’s fortunes always seem connected to his return game.
“It seems like every time I have a good return, we play well,” he said.
The 5-7 Lane senior was able to test his theory in the opening seconds Monday night at Lane Stadium.
He returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown that powered the Indians’ stunning 14-6 upset of defending Public League champion Morgan Park a playoff semifinal.
The victory propels Lane (10-2) into the Public League title game Saturday at Hanson Stadium.
“Originally I was just going to go straight up the field, but I saw their line coming down and I thought I better cut it outside,” Rashee said. “I did that and the only thing I saw was the sideline.”
Lane senior running back Thaddeus Scott keyed the Indians’ other score, ripping runs of 21 and 15 yards that set up his own seven-yard burst for a 14-0 Lane advantage.
Lane’s defense limited Morgan Park (8-5) to just 18 yards in the first half. The Indians recorded three interceptions, two by senior Chris Kyles.
Senior quarterback DaRon Brown’s 24-yard dart to Calvin Brookins narrowed the margin with 1:11 to play in the third period. Morgan Park had one final chance, taking possession at the Lane 42 with just under a minute to play.
The Mustangs reached the Lane 24-yard line, where a potential tying touchdown pass to Brookins was nullified by a holding penalty. The game ended on an incomplete pass in the end zone.
Star Morgan Park running back Dominique Bell was limited to just 50 yards on 16 carries.
