Minooka outlasts Plainfield North
Senior Night for Plainfield North’s volleyball team was also a night to remember for Minooka.
The Indians had to hold off the determined Tigers 28-26, 25-22 Monday to remain unbeaten in the Southwest Prairie Conference with one match to go, Tuesday against Plainfield South.
“Plainfield North is one of our top competitors,’’ Minooka’s Briana Marquez said. “We came in here knowing that we’d get their best, so we played equally as hard.’’
Minooka (22-2, 13-0) saw a 24-19 lead evaporate in the first game and the Indians had to rally from a 22-21 deficit in Game 2.
“We talked at the end of the match, they were winners, even when it’s a rough night,’’ Minooka coach Chris Hoelscher said. “Even though they didn’t have everything clicking they still found a way to win.’’
Marquez looped in a kill for a 26-25 lead in the opener, but the Indians faltered. A North error put Minooka ahead 27-26 before Marquez dropped in the game-winning point.
“When I see nobody in the middle on the other side of the court I feel like it’s my chance to get a little kill,’’ Marquez said of her strategy.
The second game was tied at 22 when a block by Jessica Karalow, a kill by Stacey Perinar and a North error ended the match.
Minooka got key contributions from Marquez (5 kills, 17 assists, 3 digs), Perinar (8 kills, 5 digs, ace), Skyler Day (10 kills, block) and Haley Bowden (6 digs, ace).
Plainfield North was led by Alex Marszalek (4 kills, 3 digs, block, ace), Alison Kimmel (6 kills, 2 digs) and Sammy Basar (6 digs). Dakota Santore (5 kills, 5 digs) and Emily Simonelli (4 kills, 4 digs) also contributed.
“Just a couple of points here or there, a change of momentum, and it could have gone either way,’’ North coach Tracey Marshall said of the match. “But I’m proud of how the girls played.’’
