What do you do when the senior who entered the evening with 1,218 yards rushing and was largely responsible for your 17-0 halftime lead leaves for the evening, seemingly taking momentum with him?

If you’re Minooka, at least Friday night against Romeoville, you fake it.

More specific, quarterback Joey Carnagio faked it, repeatedly, to fullback Dane Colvin, then sprinted for long, backbreaking gains as the Indians quelled a brief Romeoville rally to post a 52-20 Southwest Prairie Conference win in Minooka.

“You can see Joey Carnagio, if people devote too much attention to those running backs, how he can hurt you,” Minooka coach Bert Kooi said.

Carnagio finished with 116 yards rushing, 92 in the second half, and scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 53 and 4 yards.

All told, the Indians (6-2, 6-0), who set up a battle for the conference title at Oswego in the regular-season finale, scored 28 fourth-quarter points, after the Spartans (2-6, 1-5) crept to within 24-20.

Not that the outburst, which included two touchdown runs by Josh Pullara (15 carries, 94 yards) completely erased the memory of everything that came before.

“We’re a better football team than what we played tonight,” Kooi said. “We’ve made a big thing about getting better every week. … We definitely didn’t tonight.”

Minooka committed 10 penalties on the night and also gave up huge chunks defensively, including an 80-yard touchdown run by Perez Ford (8 carries, 83 yards), and touchdown passes of 24 and 9 yards by Jacob Bambule, to Duvaun Goodlow and Tim Welch, respectively. Bambule, making his third start, completed 12-of-28 passes for 188 yards.

Minooka led at the half thanks to Jacob Stytz’ 31-yard field goal and a pair of touchdown runs by Kalvin Hill. Hill left the game with an injured right ankle in the final minute before halftime.

“He’s had ankle problems all the way back since last year,” Kooi said. “He could’ve come back if we needed him.”
