Jacobs rolls past McHenry

Defense and special teams set the table for Jacob on Friday night by providing great field position.

The Golden Eagles offense took advantage by scoring six touchdowns in a 42-19 Fox Valley Valley victory over host McHenry.

Jacobs (4-0, 1-0) recorded six sacks and picked off the McHenry quarterback Robert Tonyan four times in the triumph. The Golden Eagles began three of their scoring drives inside McHenry territory.

Jacobs quarterback Jason Judson threw for 246 yards on 12-of-18 passing including a pair of touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown. Running back Caz Zyks added for 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles.

“I’m very proud of the way the kids have started the season 4-0,” said Jacobs coach Bill Mitz. “We had some big plays from the offense, the defense and on special teams tonight. It was great to see every one get involved and contribute.”

Jacobs scored the first 28 points of the contest. The first Eagles touchdown was set up by a blocked punt by Evan Bishop that gave them the ball at the McHenry 12-yard line. Four plays later Bishop was on the receiving end of a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jason Judson to make it 7-0.

Jacobs had to go just 29 yards on its second scoring drive after the defense pinned the Warriors deep in their own territory. Zyks ran it in from 19 yards out to put the Golden Eagles up 14-0. Jacobs tacked on another touchdown late in the second quarter as Judson had passes of 39 and 35 yards to help set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Kyle Wright to extend the lead to 21-0. Hunter Williams added to the Jacobs lead on the last play of the first half with an interception in the end zone.

The Jacobs secondary was busy all night as McHenry put the ball in the air 49 times. But the Golden Eagles were up to the challenge. Brandon Vincent, Greg Sidor, and Ryan Ulmer all added picks in the second half. Tonyan completed just 23-of-49 passes for 254 yards for McHenry.

“This is the fourth straight week we’ve played against a spread offense like this,” said Mitz. “So we were pretty prepared for it. We did the things we set out to do, and that was to put pressure on their quarterback and play aggressive in the secondary.”

Judson added a 4-yard touchdown run and a 54 yard touchdown pass in the second half. Zyks also scored from 31 yards out. Dante Petrone was in on three of the sacks for the Golden Eagles.
