A dismal showing on special teams spelled doom for Larkin on Friday night in a 19-7 loss against host McHenry in a non-conference game to kick off the 2011 season. The Warriors recovered an onside kick, a pooch kick and blocked a punt all within the first 13 minutes of the game to put the Royals in a big hole early.
“We got outcoached in the third phase with the special teams,” said Larkin coach Mike Scianna. “Hats off to (McHenry). We had to regroup and get our kids going.”
The Royals went three-and-out on their first possession, and had their punt blocked by Ethan Jones to set up a first-and-goal from the 3-yard line. Senior Brian Frapolly made Larkin pay by scoring on the first play from scrimmage to put McHenry up 6-0 with 10:45 to play in the first quarter.
McHenry did a pooch kick on the ensuing kickoff, and two Larkin players collided, allowing the Warriors to again take possession. After eventually missing a field-goal attempt, the Warriors took a 12-0 lead early in the second quarter after senior Grant Watkins capped off a 65-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge up the middle. The score was set up by a 44-yard strike down the middle of the field from quarterback Robert Tonyan to Bryan Wegner.
Tonyan finished 12-of-24 passing for 177 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Wegner had six receptions for 132 yards.
“They got some speed and that shocked the hell out of me,” Scianna said. “They’re a pretty good team over there with some tough kids. We made some mistakes on defense. We have some young linebackers that need to step up a little more.”
After an onside kick, the Warriors took a 19-0 lead when Tonyan found Frapolly for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 7:40 left in the half.
The Royals made a game of it on their possession when speedy senior quarterback Kyle Newquist took a keeper down the left sideline 42 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 19-7.
Larkin’s defense held tough in the second half but the offense couldn’t sustain any rhythm.
Justin Banks had six receptions for 55 yards, and Newquist ended his night 12-of-33 passing for 116 yards with one interception for Larkin. He also ran for a team-high 47 yards.
After piling up 221 yards of total offense in the first half, the Warriors were held to 48 yards in the second half. Larkin had 160 yards total offense.
