Mather returns to Luther North finals
Mather's quest to win back-to-back Luther North Holiday Tournament championships is still alive.
The Rangers dispatched Jones 58-37 on Wednesday night in semifinal action. The win puts the Rangers (9-2) in the title game against King at 8 p.m. Thursday.
"If we want to beat King we can't allow anything inside," said Mather coach Glen Heffernan. "King showed a lot of heart; they were down by 11 and came back to win."
The Rangers were on cruise control all evening. Leading 15-9 after one quarter, they took a 31-16 lead at the half and Jones (4-8) never drew any closer.
Glen Heffernan Jr., the coach's son, scored 17 points and handed out nine assists. "I was pleased with my shooting and ball-handling tonight," said Heffernan Jr. "We have to have to continue to play good defense if we want to repeat."
Kyle Gordon added 14 and Brandon Roby scored nine. Jones was led by John Chico with 12 points.
