Marian Central takes down Marmion

Marian Central completed a perfect campaign through the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division Friday, defeating shorthanded Marmion Academy 28-7 in Aurora.

Marian Central (9-0, 5-0) took a 7-0 lead on its second possession when 6-foot-3 junior quarterback Chris Streveler (14 of 20, 202 yards) found Nikko Theodorou with a 33-yard pass on fourth-and-two. The play capped a six-play, 80-yard drive following a Marmion punt from the Hurricanes’ 34-yard line.

Marmion (5-4, 2-3) answered early in the second quarter when junior fullback Cody Snodgrass broke loose on an 83-yard touchdown gallop, and had a chance to take the lead after a 38-yard pass play from Charlie Faunce to Jake Ruddy carried to the Marian Central 22. But A.J. Friedman’s 42-yard field goal attempt hit the bottom of the crossbar.

“We got off to a slow start,” Marian Central coach Ed Brucker said. “It was a sloppy game in a lot of ways. We haven’t played a whole game in four weeks. We’ve been playing the JV in the second half the last four games. Our defense made some mistakes. We were playing two defenses at the same time, which is hard to do.”

Taking over at its own 20, Marian Central needed just one minute to score as Streveler completed 5 of 6 passes for 70 yards, including a 20-yarder to Scott Stochl to the Marmion 25. Two plays later, Streveler called his own number and danced into the endzone virtually untouched from the 10-yard line.

Marian Central extended the lead to 21-7 on a one-yard plunge by Streveler with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter after Kyle Thompson returned an interception to the Cadet’s 22-yard line, and capped the scoring on a two-yard run by Sam Calderaro (15 carries, 138 yards) with 8:55 left in the game.

Marmion, which has ample points to qualify for the playoffs at 5-4, played without 6-4, 270-pound two-way lineman Ryan Glasgow, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last week against Guerin Prep.
