Marmion runs over Chicago Christian

Updated: March 22, 2011 5:20PM

Marmion Academy's home finale against Chicago Christian had a little bit of everything. But nobody in the crowd expected brothers Ryan and Graham Glasgow to both score a touchdown.

The mammoth pair channeled a little William Perry near the goal line to provide Cadet fans with some entertainment, as Marmion stayed unbeaten with a 48-7 rout over the undermanned Knights.

There was no chance Marmion would be caught looking ahead to next week's conference showdown at Montini. The Cadets moved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Suburban Christian Blue.

This game was nothing more than a tuneup for the Cadets, since Chicago Christian (2-6 overall, 1-4 SCB) dressed only 19 players with several players in street clothes. Against a strong Marmion running game, there was little the Knights could do to stop the onslaught.

Until the running clock started midway through the third period and Cadet substitutes entered, the only time Marmion was stopped short of the goal line was late in the first quarter, when AJ Friedman kicked a 28-yard field goal.

Otherwise, the field was tilted against the Knights with the Glasgow brothers clearing a path on the left side of the line. T.J. Lally got Marmion going on its fifth play from scrimmage, taking a Bobby Peters pitch and blazing 71 yards up the middle for a 6-0 lead.

After Friedman's field goal, Marmion gave up the only big play on defense, a 74-yard scoring pass from Jason VanderLaan to Mike Kamp to cut the margin to 9-7.

But then Lally struck again. A simple sweep, which Chicago Christian could not stop all night, turned into a 64-yard scoring jaunt. Lally, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound bruiser with deceptive speed, amassed 209 yards on only seven carries for Marmion Academy.

Moments later, following a Knights punt, Peters hooked up with Nick Scoliere for a 51-yard scoring pass, making it 17 points on three offensive plays. Scoliere's run after the short pass was easily the highlight play of the night. The senior ran an out pattern, found himself hemmed in on the left side, danced around to avoid several tackles, made it all the way across to the right side of the field, then weaved his way to the end zone for a 23-7 lead.

The only sustained drive of the game came in the second period. Peters got hot, connecting with five different receivers, before the 6-3, 245-pound Ryan Glasgow, a junior, completed the 13-play, 90-yard drive by bulling in off tackle from three yards out.

Garret Becker (8 carries, 51 yards) got in on the fun by scoring from three yards out with 1:56 to go in the half, which ended with the Cadets up 36-7.

After the intermission, Marmion made short work of obtaining the 40-point margin required for the running clock. Graham Glasgow, a senior who measures 6-7, 295, was not to be denied in rumbling into the end zone from six yards out. Then Peters (10 of 17 passing for 167 yards and two touchdowns) found Mike Carbonara open in the back corner of the end zone from 16 yards out.

The Cadets amassed 534 yards of offense, 367 of which came on the ground (on only 32 rushes). Carbonara matched Becker with 51 yards on only three carries. Through the air, Nick Scoliere was outstanding with five catches for 123 yards.

But every player on Marmion knows that Montini will present a completely different challenge next week, with a conference championship and a high postseason seeding on the line.
