Marmion Academy shot putter Joe Weber wasn't happy with a throw that won him a Suburban Catholic Conference title Thursday, even though it was six feet farther than the nearest competitor.

So Weber proceeded to get correctional coaching, tossing a shot put afterward that would have beaten the school record he threw last week.

That desire to win was apparent in all Cadets competitors as Marmion captured the conference title for the fourth year in a row.

"I'm very pleased," Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. "It's a credit to the kids. Our kids work hard and track has become a big deal at Marmion."

Weber also won the discus with a toss of 153-6, scoring 20 points on the way to Marmion's total of 171.

"I just stay focused," said Weber, who threw 51-6 in the shot. "I'm here to win and it feels good. Little disappointed with shot put, but discus was a personal best."

Marmion senior Oscar Aguinaga was named Conference Athlete of the Year with first-place finishes in the 800 (1:55) and the 1,600 (4:27)-- the latter a conference record.

"I was just trying to run fast, really," Aguinaga said after being paced for the first 800. "I was aiming for the school record (in the 800), but I just didn't have it today. I really just wanted to get out there and tear it up."

Also scoring well was Cadets senior Alex Rindone, last year's athlete of the year.

Rindone took first in the 100, 200, and anchored the first-place 400 relay team.

"Overall, we were happy with the night," Rindone said. "We wish we could have got the 4 x 200 (disqualified). We were trying to get all 40 points in the sprints. I just did what I could and it happened to be good."

Aurora Central Catholic finished in fourth place (74.50 points), highlighted by Phil Karafiat's win in the pole vault, a 3,200 relay win, and second in the 800 relay.

"We've got some great kids here," Chargers' coach Troy Kerber said. "We wanted to come in and be top three, but I've been real pleased with the performances."

The Charger relay team of Dan Kottkamp, Jimmy Spencer, Ben Garcia, and John Jochum finished in a time of 8:30.

"We've won four out of the last five invitationals," Kerber said of the relay. "Those guys have been running pretty solid."

Karafiat's vault was 10 feet even.

Said Kerber: "That was a great conference meet for a senior to win an individual title"

Other individual titles for Marmion were Mike Shay (long jump), Sam Duffield (high jump), Jared Meyer (110-meter hurdles), and Andrew Larsen in the 3,200 (9:23).

The Cadets also won the 1,600 relay, setting them up for a good showing at sectionals.

"Sectionals is just a matter of getting kids through to state." Thorpe said.

"Right now, we're excited because one of our goals was to win a conference championship." Boys Track: SCC Meet
