Marist was caught at its own game on Friday night.

Homewood-Flossmoor outpassed and outran the RedHawks, scoring a 48-28 victory in the Class 8A first-round game at Marist in Mount Greenwood. H-F (7-3) meets Lockport next week.

For all the talk about Marist’s passing game, it was H-F’s, in the person of Tim Williams, that got the job done. He threw for 199 yards, completing 16 of 21 passes, and ran for 70 yards and three touchdowns.

“I know if I need any help, I can go to Tim; he leads us,” Vikings running back Anfernee Roberts said.

Roberts was a bulwark on the ground, running for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

As impressive, H-F’s defense clamped down on Marist’s attack, holding the RedHawks to one touchdown in the final 29 minutes.

It was 21-all at the half. Then the Vikings took over, taking advantage of turnovers by receiver Ryan Carroll and quarterback Ian Woodworth.

“They capitalized on our turnovers,” Marist coach Pat Dunne said. “At halftime, they manned up on us.”

Those gave the Vikings the ball on the Marist 15 and the Marist 1. That was easy pickings for H-F, Roberts scoring on each occasion.

“We’re probably quicker than some of the teams they’ve played,” H-F coach Craig Buzea said. “If we could just keep it in front and make some plays, they would fumble the ball.

“We didn’t blitz a lot, but we’ve got a pretty good front three. We knew we had to stop their sprint-out game. That took one whole thing away, and they had to be a straight drop-back team.”

Marist (7-3) lost captain Ryan Meyer to a recurrence of his shoulder injury on his tackle on the opening kickoff.

“He’s a game-changer, a leader,” Dunne said. “He was fighting to get back in.”
