Football: Marist takes care of Notre Dame

No. 6 Marist opened the season celebrating new field turf, Senior Night and, most important, a 35-21 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory over Notre Dame on Friday.

With starting quarterback Luke Oosterbaan sidelined, Ian Woodworth stepped in nicely, throwing four touchdown passes to lead the RedHawks.

Woodworth (14-for-24, 237 yards) found Ryan Carroll (5 catches, 47 yards, 2 TDs) for a 12-yard pass to open the scoring in the first quarter. After back-to-back touchdowns for Notre Dame on runs of 8 and 20 yards by quarterback Nick Pieruccini, Woodworth found Nic Weisher (5 catches, 176 yards, 2 TDs) for a 61-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

Woodworth found Carroll for a 26-yard touchdown pass to give Marist a 21-14 lead at halftime after a Dan Schmidt interception had given the RedHawks the ball.

Peter Andreotti added a 25-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter for Marist (1-0, 1-0), and Woodworth found Weisher for a 28-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to seal the win.

After allowing Pieruccini to run for 93 yards on 11 carries in the first half, the Marist defense held him to 18 yards on five carries in the second half. Pieruccini had a 1-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to close the scoring.
