Mount Carmel takes down Marist

This time a year ago, Tom Schergen was the Marist athletic director and assistant soccer coach for the RedHawks under Sean Maxwell.
Schergen was on the other sideline Thursday, coaching Mount Carmel to a 2-1 victory in his return to RedHawks country since leaving for the Caravan coaching position.
“I wanted more time with my family, so this was a change that worked out,” Schergen said. “This game is something we’re going to continue to play every year because (Maxwell) and I respect each other so much.”
Maxwell echoed Schergen’s sentiments.
“It’s fun to be coaching against him,” Maxwell said. “I know Mount Carmel has been switching coaches a lot lately, so hopefully, things work out for Tom.”
Things worked out for Mount Carmel (5-1) early, as the Caravan scored two goals on the team’s first two shots. Twenty-seven seconds into the match, Hrovje Juric found a loose ball 30 yards out, sprinted past the defense and fired low the ball into the right corner of the net to make it 1-0. Ninety seconds later, Ante Kraljevic sent a dribbler in the box that bounced perfectly in front of Daniel Hayes, who headed it into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
“It was a chip in and there was a lot of bobbling around and I was just there for the tip in,” Hayes said. “We’ve been winning a lot of hustle games, so we’re trying to continue that and keep ourselves going.”
Two minutes had not passed since Hayes found the back of the net when Roger Ciszewski redirected a ball to a streaking Tom O’Neill, who scored to get Marist (3-2) on the board.
It looked as though the game would be a shootout, but no goals were scored in the final 76½ minutes as the Caravan picked up its fourth straight victory.
“I think both teams had emotions coming out,” Schergen said. “I know a lot of the guys on our team know a lot of the guys on their team, so emotions in the first five minutes were all over the board.
“As the game settled in, I think we saw what a good soccer game it was.”
