Marian Central overpowers Knights

Updated: March 22, 2011 4:08PM

Marian Central forced and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff Saturday afternoon and the Hurricanes just kept rolling as they scored 54 straight points and earned a 54-7 victory over Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst.

Corey Cavitt scored three rushing touchdowns for Marian while collecting 100 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Ben Krol tossed two scoring strikes to Scott Stochl and another to Andrew Stone, in addition to rushing for a one-yard TD in the first quarter.

The Hurricanes (3-2, 1-1) also dominated on defense, as Branden Rowe returned an interception 40 yards for a score, and Stochl picked up a fumble and found the end-zone on a 23-yard return.

IC (3-2, 1-1) scored in the fourth quarter, when Matt Mesnard took a pitch and got to the outside for a 23-yard touchdown run. Mesnard finished with 71 yards on 12 carries.

"We knew it was an uphill battle (against Marian), but we certainly thought we would play a good game," Knights coach Mike Alberts said. "It seems we always have one kid on every play that makes a critical mistake. If we are ever going to do anything this year, we have to find a way to move past that."
