Evanston senior running back Ray Bahr scored three first-half touchdowns, two on the ground and one through the air, as the Wildkits routed Maine East 44-0 in Park Ridge on Friday.

Bahr reached the end zone on runs of six and 13 yards and scored on a 35-yard screen pass for from senior quarterback Max Block as the Wildkits (2-1) built a 30-0 halftime lead.

The Wildkits’ second-string defense helped preserve the shutout by stopping the Blue Demons on a 1st and goal late in the game.

“I thought we were able to establish a nice rhythm in the passing game,” Evanston head coach Mike Burzawa said. “We wanted to tackle better and do a better job on offense getting into a rhythm. We sputtered (offensively) for a couple weeks. (Block) made some big completions in the short passing game and the offensive line settled down after the first couple series and started to get the push we were looking for.”

The Wildkits also scored on a 17-yard field goal by junior Alex Vergara, a seven-yard run by senior Aaron Potts, Vergara’s 3-yard run and an eight-yard run by senior Devante Phillips.

Maine East (0-3) has been shutout for consecutive weeks, but head coach Gabe Corey said his young team is making progress.

“I look at the four non-conference games like our exhibition season. The five that count are when we get to conference,” Corey said. “If we can get everything going in the right direction, clean some things up . . . the kids’ heart, their drive, their passion, it’s all in the right place. It still matters to them. They are giving me everything they have.”

Evanston hosts Glenbrook North at 7:30 p.m. next Friday. Maine East travels to Glenbrook South at 7:30 p.m. the same night.
