Amundsen, Maxwell blank Maine East

Everything that could go wrong did for Maine East (0-2) in its 35-0 loss to visiting Amundsen (1-1), but at least the Blue Demons don’t have to deal with Desroy Maxwell anymore.
Maxwell caught the game’s first two touchdowns from his wide receiver position, dominated at linebacker, booted field goals of 32 and 40 yards and punted well. The fourth-year varsity standout added three extra points on a kick and a reception. Rangy and tough, the 6-foot-3, 235-pounder is being heavily recruited by Illinois, Northern Illinois and other D-1 schools.
The Blue Demons trailed 16-0 after Maxwell snared Patrick McCoy’s 9-yard sideline floater in traffic with one hand. The Cardinals made it 19-0 on Maxwell’s first field goal 22 seconds before intermission.
Maine East looked comeback-bound at the start of the third quarter. Head coach Gabe Corey called an onside kick, and his son Alex Corey recovered the squirmer. Sophomore Javed Lukovic, who finished with 88 yards on 11 carries, broke free for 33 yards to highlight a seven-play drive to the 4.
But an outstretched Charlie Kappos could only get a fingertip on George Zakharia’s fourth-down pass in the end zone.
Zakharia endured both frustration and cramps on a muggy 90-degree night. His only completion in 12 tries was an 11-yard shovel pass to Mike Kuzebski early in the fourth quarter. His receivers did not secure four catchable throws.
Kuzebski stood out at outside linebacker with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Federico Cabrales forced a fumble, and Zakharia had an interception.
