Lyons quarterback sidelined with injury

Lyons quarterback Connor Onion played through the pain in the second quarter of Saturday’s 33-10 loss at Hinsdale Central, but the 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior could not continue in the second half.
Onion wasn’t interested in making excuses for his worst game of the season. He finished 6-for-11 passing for 52 yards, with two interceptions in the second quarter.
Onion injured his left (non-throwing) elbow in the first quarter.
“I ran with the ball, but when I put my hand down to keep the ball, I hit the ground and felt something snap,” Onion said.
X-rays after the game were negative regarding any broken bones, Onion indicated. But he needs to undergo an MRI, so, his status is unknown for the Lions’ homecoming game against Oak Park-River Forest (2-3, 1-2 West Suburban Silver) in Western Springs at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
“The trainers told me it could be a ligament or tendon,” Onion said. “I hope it’s just a bad bruise. Hopefully, we’ll get it checked out. We’ll figure something out to get me back on the field.”
Onion’s only running play from scrimmage in the first quarter was a 9-yard keeper up the middle with nearly five minutes remaining. That play came on Lyons’ third play from scrimmage to start the game, after Hinsdale Central ended its opening drive with a 27-yard field goal by Alex Georgelos.
After the running play, Onion’s next two pass attempts were incomplete, and the second one was dropped. Onion was sacked three times in the second quarter for a total loss of 18 yards.
Onion’s first interception came one play after he was sacked a third time, when Peter Nelson dropped him for an 8-yard loss. Linebacker Matt Helsley snagged Onion’s pass at the Lyons’ 44-yard line after fellow linebacker Mike Fikaris tipped the ball across the middle. The interception came with 2:43 remaining in the second quarter.
The fewest amount of yards Onion has thrown for in a game this season was 165 in a 28-16 win over Downers Grove North on Sept. 16.
Onion’s backup, junior Zachary Mahoney, went 3-for-8 for 16 yards in the second half. Mahoney played in only one other game this season, coming in late during Glenbard West’s 31-3 win over Lyons on Sept. 9.
