The Lyons Township football team was trying to stay in contention for a spot in the playoffs Saturday, but could not avoid a few explosive plays by Glenbard West in a 28-14 loss in a West Suburban Silver Conference game in Glen Ellyn.

Despite cutting the deficit to 21-14 with just over a minute left in the third quarter when Ryan Mitchell (17-of-26 passing, 130 yards) hit Jordan Hester for a 15-yard score, the Lions then watched Bryant Venson return the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a TD and never recovered.

The loss was the fifth for LT, which eliminates the Lions from playoff contention, while the Hilltoppers (8-0, 5-0 in Silver) remained undefeated and atop the conference standings heading into a conference title showdown at Hinsdale Central (7-1, 5-0) Friday, Oct. 24, in Hinsdale.

LT (3-5, 2-3) got behind on the first play of the game when Venson (138 yards, 9 carries) took a handoff and turned the corner to break loose for a 65-yard TD run. Tim Hollowed kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Glenbard West lead.

The Lions responded two drives later, moving the ball 57 yards in five plays and finding the end zone when Mitchell hit Nick Brown (6 catches, 46 yards) for a 9-yard TD completion. The score was knotted at 7-7 after Ethan Guenther's extra-point kick.

Glenbard West took the lead for good in the closing minutes of the first half when Chris Cochrane (7-of-12 passing, 146 yards) hit Jessie Condie with a scoring strike on a play that started as first-and-goal from the 32-yard line. The series started at the LT 34-yard line when Pat Loveless recovered a Lions' fumble.
