It was not always pretty, but Hope Academy found a way to maintain its unblemished record.
Adrian Hurst scored two touchdowns over a six-minute stretch of the fourth quarter to break an 8-8 tie and lead the Eagles (8-0) to a 22-8 victory over Longwood at St. Rita.
Hurst scored all three touchdowns and also made an interception in the end zone to thwart a potential score by Longwood (2-6). Following a Hope safety, Hurst’s two-yard run put the Eagles up 8-0.
“It was a total team effort,” Hurst said. “After they tied up the game, I went into the defensive huddle and just told everybody, ‘It’s on us to win the game.’”
Longwood quarterback Nate Williams scored on a two-yard run and added a two-point conversion to make it 8-8 with 3:37 to play in the third quarter.
Hope recorded the safety late in the second quarter as a gang of tacklers swarmed Williams in the end zone.
