Girls Basketball: Sandburg gets by Lockport

It’s often said that one quarter does not a game make.
But the fact of the matter was that Thursday’s second period really did mean just about everything in host Sandburg’s 51-38 SouthWest Suburban Blue victory over Lockport.
It was during those eight minutes that Sandburg, trailing 9-7 going in, outscored the Porters 22-1.
The closest Lockport would get the rest of the way was eight.
Junior Carly Katalinic was a catalyst for Sandburg with 15 points, 13 of them coming in the second quarter. Jen Pache added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Ashley Youngwirth 10 points for the Eagles (3-2, 1-0).
Taylor Quain paced Lockport (2-5, 0-1) with 15 points and five rebounds, while Nicole Foresman and Valerie Renkor added seven points each.
Catalinic was the offensive spark in the second period for Sandburg, going 5-of-6 from the field and hitting three 3-pointers. She has nine for the season, close to half of her total amount in 2010-11.
“I really worked hard over the summer, because that’s the area where my game was really hurting,” Catalinic said. “So I really put in the time working on my threes.”
Aside from her sharpshooting, the Eagles as a whole were able to successfully employ a trapping man-to-man defense, forcing Lockport into, during one second period stretch, nine consecutive turnovers.
“We came off the first quarter pretty disappointed with our defense,” Catalinic said. “So we really picked up the intensity. I think all of our points came off of the defensive end.”
Indeed, 12 Sandburg points during the run were the direct result of steals at the other end.
Lockport’s problem wasn’t shooting. It was getting off shots at all.
“We have to learn to keep our composure and take care of the basketball,” Porters coach Krista Peterson said. “We were just rushing things, and just made some bad decisions.”
Down as much as 33-10, Lockport closed the third quarter with a 15-3 run as Quain went 3-for-4 from the field and hit a pair of free throws.
The Porters got as close as 37-29 with 5:15 left in the fourth quarter, but Sandburg was able to stem the tide with strong play under the basket by Pache and 8-of-9 free throw shooting.
