Playing Lockport must bring out the best in Tim Williams.
The Homewood-Floosmoor senior quarterback threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Vikings routed Lockport 48-7 Friday night in a second round Class 8A playoff game in Flossmoor.
The win puts the Vikings (8-3) in the quarterfinals for the second straight season. They will play at Naperville Central, a 43-3 winner over Belleville East.
I had some success against them last time,” said Williams, who had a career-high 5 touchdown passes in the regular season meeting - 35-0 win at Lockport. “Coach [Craig Buzea] told me he didn’t want us to punt the ball, and I took that as a challenge.”
H-F never punted. Williams, who was 13-of-15 for 348 yards, threw a 46-yard TD strike to Sean Jones and added a 2-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Lockport (7-4) cut the lead to 14-7 on an 11-yard TD pass from Billy Reed to Sam Stramaglia on the first play of the second quarter. Reed was 11-of-17 with 2 interceptions for 129 yards.
But the Vikings extended the advantage to 28-7 at halftime as Williams scored on an 11-yard TD run and Anfernee Roberts scored from 5 yards out with 39.2 seconds left in the second quarter.
In the second half, Williams hooked up with Jones again for a 37-yard score, found Gerald Butler on a 10-yard TD pass and Roberts capped the scoring with a 2-yard run. Jones finished with seven receptions for 267 yards.
“We have that connection on and off the field,” said Williams of Jones. “I’ve known him since we were 5 or so. I can put the ball anywhere, and he’ll go get it.”
