Lincoln-Way East quarterback Blake Winkler celebrated his 18th birthday by throwing for 265 yards and three touchdowns Friday night as the Griffins cruised past Lockport 38-7 in a SouthWest Suburban Blue opener in Frankfort.
Wide receiver J.J. Robertson returned to the lineup after missing the first two games for violating a school rule and hauled in a pair of touchdown passes for the Griffins (3-0, 1-0).
“It felt amazing to get out there and play in my first game,” Robertson said. “I did what I could in the offense. The first drive set the tone and we are very lucky to have Blake Winkler.”
East went 94 yards on 15 plays and taking nearly eight minutes off the clock on the opening possession. Winkler capped it with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jay Yancy. It was the fourth third-down conversion in the drive.
Winkler found Robertson for a 33-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. A 33-yard field goal by William Will extended the Griffins’ lead to 17-0 at halftime.
Blake Anders scored on a four-yard run in the third quarter to make it 24-0.
Lockport (2-1, 0-1) scored on one of the few Winkler mistakes of the night. Ted Snidanko returned an interception 102 yards to cut the lead to 24-7 with 3:45 left in the third quarter.
East capped the win with two fourth-quarter TDs. Robertson made a diving catch on an 11-yard touchdown pass, and David Mahl scored from a yard out after a fumble recovery by Kyle Langenderfer.
Winkler was 18-for-25. Robertson had five catches for 102 yards and Yancy added seven for 85. East outgained the Porters 434-40.
