Boys Basketball: Homewood-Flossmoor beats Lockport late

Courtney Cole hit a floater from the baseline with 12 seconds to play to lead Lockport past host Homewood-Flossmoor 52-50 on Friday night in the SouthWest Suburban Blue.
The Porters (13-8, 4-5) handed the No. 3 Vikings (15-6, 8-1) their first conference loss of the season.
“Time was running down and we didn’t have any timeouts left to get set up,” Cole said. “My partner got trapped in the corner. He kicked it out to me. I practice the floater, but I don’t use it often. I knew I had to get it over the taller man or he was going to block it. I got a good angle and I floated it.”
The Porters opened an 18-11 lead with 4:48 to play in the second quarter before the Vikings crept back. A Cole floater with two seconds left in the period gave Lockport a 24-21 halftime lead.
H-F went on a 10-0 run in the first 2:08 of the third period to take a 31-24 lead. Marius Hill scored five of the points during the run.
“Marius Hill was really our fire tonight. He was our heart and soul. He put us on his back and led by playing hard,” H-F coach James McLaughlin said.
Lockport, which lost to H-F 49-43 in overtime on Dec. 9, didn’t fold. The Porters fought back behind three-pointers by Cole, John Campbell and Brandon Sawin to gain a 34-all tie with 2:27 left in the quarter. A basket by Kyle Ward with 10 seconds left cut the Vikings’ lead to 37-36. Ward then rebounded an H-F miss and threw an outlet pass to Sawin who converted a layup at the buzzer to give the Porters a 38-37 lead after three.
Tyrone Sherman gave the Vikings their last lead of the game at 42-40 with a three-pointer. Lockport led 50-45 with 1:06 to play before the Vikings’ Delvon Rencher nailed a three-pointer. Rencher’s two free throws with 42 ticks left tied the score at 50.
After Cole’s floater found the bottom of the net, Sherman drove the length of the floor and got into the lane where he lost the handle on the ball and it went out of bounds to Lockport with four seconds showing.
Cole finished with 12 points to lead Lockport. Campbell added nine points for the Porters. Tim Williams led H-F with 12 points.
