Boys Basketball: Aurora Christian gets out to quick start vs Lisle

Aurora Christian got its running game going early to build a big lead, got a little sloppy, but managed to hold off Kazim Kahn and Lisle 62-44 Tuesday in nonconference basketball.
“That’s kind of been our mantra so far, getting out early and then relaxing,” said Eagles coach Steve Hanson, whose team is now 6-1. “We try to do things our way instead of continuing with what got us there. We’re still trying to figure out our rotations, though, trying to find out what works best.”
Early on, it was the handiwork of 6-foot-6 senior C.J. Schutt, who scored all of his team-high 15 points in the first half as the hosts built a 35-20 lead at the break. Schutt had three of his six rebounds and four blocked shots in the first half but did not score in the second.
“They really clamped down on him and tried to make us shoot,” said Hanson. “He was having his way in the first half.”
He was one of four Eagles scoring in double figures. Cory Windle came off the bench to added 12 while sophomore Johnathan Harrell and senior Jake Hanson added 10 each.
They needed those points to offset the work of Kahn, a 6-1 senior guard who came in averaging 23 points and finished with a game-high 28. He had 10 in the second quarter to keep his team in it then added 11 in the third when the Lions cut an 18-point deficit to eight on a Julian Velazquez putback with 37 seconds left.
“(Kahn) is a tough matchup because he’s quick and plays guard but then he goes down and posts up because he’s so strong,” said Steve Hanson. “He’s all we could handle. We ran different guys at him. It seems like everything they did ran through him, which is understandable.”
Aurora Christian went back to its 3-2 zone with the long-armed Harrell out front and the visitors went cold, managing just 1 of 13 from the floor in the final quarter.
“I’m proud of the kids, we made a good run in the third quarter to get back in it,’ said Lisle coach Mark Lascala, whose team fell to 2-7. “But then they changed defenses and we stalled out.
“In the first half, we took too long to adapt to their transition game. They really get up and down.”
Guard Cam Bell added nine points but Lisle got little production from anyone else.
“We need to get (Khan) some help, it’s been like that all year,” said Lascala.
