Jason DePolo wasn’t very pleased after his Lincoln-Way Central wrestling team went 1-2 at last year’s Lincoln-Way Cup quadrangular meet.

But on Saturday, the Knight coach had a big smile on his face after watching his squad perform against the other three Lincoln-Way schools.

Despite not having two of its best individuals competing, Central still posted a 3-0 mark and walked away with the trophy in the meet in Frankfort.

The Knights closed with a 52-15 victory over host North after defeating West 30-21 in the middle dual and opening up with a 39-20 triumph over East.

“This was a chance for some others to step up and we wanted to see who would go 3-0 and we had a few guys do that,” DePolo said. “We have a lot of depth this year which is something that we haven’t had since I’ve been here.”

Posting 3-0 records for the Knights were Tyler Schneider (152), Bryce Gorman (170) and Brett Ditchman (182) while Joey Nelson (120), Mick Korte (126) and Joe Lyman (220) all turned in 2-0 efforts.

Central (14-1), which competed without Tyler Price and Robbie Mikenis, faced its toughest test against its crosstown rival West, which won last year’s Cup.

The Knights also got 2-1 performances from Danny Harris (106), Jamie Fabian (132) and Grant Bartell (285) to cap a 5-0 week in which they also ended a long drought against Providence.

West ended the day with a 36-24 victory over East after opening it with a 57-12 win over the host Phoenix. The 2-1 showing improved its record to 12-3 on the year.

“We lost 11 or 12 starters from last year,” West coach Brian Glynn said. “Even though we’re pretty young, I’m real happy with how guys have stepped up. Our goal was to win the Cup again and we competed well against Central.”

The Warriors got 3-0 efforts from Noah Keefe (132), Javier Motalvo (160) and Colin Mulroe (195) while Luke Keefe (138), Will Hubbard (145) and Josh Ruettiger (152) went 2-1 on the day.

East defeated North 60-24 to win Frankfort bragging rights, which was the lone positive during a week in which the Griffins suffered four defeats.

“We were 1-4 this week and that’s tough to swallow, but a lot of it is because we just haven’t wrestled tough,” East coach Tyrone Byrd said. “Some of our guys are wrestling tough and we’re going to keep pushing the others.”

The Griffins got 3-0 showings from Sean Sibley (106), David Rollins (138), Kyle Langenderfer (145) and Nicky Allegretti (285) while North had 2-1 efforts from Alex Vargas (160/170) and Tyler Hill (220).
