A nonconference match Monday between Lincoln-Way West and Oak Forest at Laraway Lanes in New Lenox left both coaches pleased.

Lincoln-Way West beat Oak Forest 2,817-2,541 in the three-game dual, but both coaches were much happier than when the teams shared lanes Dec. 3 in the Bengal Bowling Invite. West finished ninth and Oak Forest 12th in that tournament.

“We’ve kind of struggled with our tournaments,” said West coach Mike Vogler, whose team improved to 7-3 in duals. “But we’ve bowled well our last three duals. And it was good to get all the boys a little extra experience with that third game.”

West outscored Oak Forest 1,949-1,651 in the first two games, powered by a 231 and 226 from junior Vince Pacione.

The coaches made a decision to make it a three-game match, and Oak Forest improved on its first game by 106 pins. The Bengals won the third game 890-868.

“This was a lot better than (the recent invitational), and we bowled better at the end (Monday),” said Oak Forest coach Kevin Donegan, whose team is 6-4. “We’re working on getting the kids consistent with their release and concentrating on picking up their spares.”

Brandon Kusnierz (191-214-194) led Oak Forest with a 599 series. Kyle Sinwelski didn’t bowl with the varsity in the first game, but rolled a 213 and 211 in the final two games.

Pacione finished with a 636 series (212 average) for West. Kevin Cucci (561 series) had a 222 game, and Nick Mikoff turned in a 571 series.

“The first two games we shot pretty well,” Vogler said. “We’re much better than we’ve shown at times. I think we’ll get better. We have the potential to be there at the end of the year.”
