Hillcrest didn’t exactly struggle, but did meet some resistance from Lincoln-Way North before the No. 3 Hawks prevailed, 78-56, in the championship game of the 36th annual Rich South tournament.
It was Hillcrest’s sixth consecutive tournament title.
Dana Gettis led the Hawks (4-0) with 19 points, while Jasmine Sanders (15 points), Shannise Heady (15 points, six rebounds, six steals, four assists) and Jahmia Phillips (12 points, eight rebounds, four steals) were also key.
Taylor Boardman had 21 points and Ellen Graham 12 for Lincoln-Way North (4-0).
The game was close early. Lincoln-Way North, in fact, stayed within single digits until early in the third period thanks to some impressive play underneath by 6-foot Boardman.
Elise Lampley drove for a layup to get the Phoenix within 36-30 at the outset of the third period, but Sanders responded with a 3-pointer, and Phillips a three-point play for the Hawks.
“We just basically tried to pick it up on defense,” Sanders said. “We tried to torment the ballhandler a little more and get some turnovers.”
Later, Hillcrest received nine points from Gettis during an 18-0 salvo that allowed the Hawks to erase any doubt.
“I was feeling it. I just wanted to help the team,” Gettis said. “I’m working hard on defense and everything else comes along. This is all about the team.”
