One of the area’s hottest teams, Lincoln-Way North visited Sandburg on Monday with its perfect 5-0 mark in the SouthWest Suburban.

But as strong as the Phoenix has been playing, Sandburg was stronger, winning a convincing 25-16, 25-15 crossover.

“We take each opponent seriously and look at what they have and try to take them out of their game,” Sandburg’s Bill Siroky said. “We always try to play to our strengths and take their strengths away.”

Kevin Groeper (2 aces) and Andrew Muys had six kills apiece for Sandburg (20-3, 6-0), while Siroky (3 kills), Tommy Carmody (5 blocks) and Nick Bendell (20 assists) all contributed.

Justin Morris (7 kills), Haakon Skrodal (5 kills), Jake Walenga (4 kills) and Zak Erdmann (11 assists) led North (18-7, 5-1).

“We had about four guys who were executing really well, and the other guys just didn’t bring it,” North coach Matt Lawrence said. “Against a team like Sandburg, you need all six.”

The Eagles blew open the first game, closing on a 15-8 run. The second game was much of the same as Sandburg opened a 7-2 lead, highlighted by Siroky and Groeper combining for a huge block on a North attack.

A Morris kill brought North to within 15-11 before Sandburg pulled away for good.

“We still haven’t put together a full match, but today might have been the closest,” Siroky said. “We all know we can play better individually and as a team.”
