L-W East falls to Glenbard West

The play of Glenbard West's 6-4 Mark Hiben wasn't a surprise to Lincoln-Way East coach Rob Zvonar, but his results were.
Hiben finished with 12 catches for a state record 319 yards and four touchdowns as the host Hilltoppers held off a valiant rally by the Griffins for a 42-28 victory in a second round Class 7A playoff battle Saturday in Glen Ellyn.
Hiben, whose last catch, a 19-yarder over a defender in the end zone, allowed his receiving total to eclipse the 317 yards by Hinsdale Central's Pete Bylsma against Evanston in 1971.
"That kid [Hiben] is an all-stater," Zvonar said. "We knew that going in. He is a great player and Glenbard West is a great football team. I was proud of the resolve and character we showed when we got on a roll. I was not happy with what I had the defense do."
Down 28-13 Lincoln-Way East (9-2) tied the game on a 73-yard scoring pass from Blake Winkler to Kyle Buchback, a 44-yard run by Tyler Starke and a two-point conversion on a Winkler-to-Starke pass.
"They were an unbelievable team with a great defense," said Winkler, a junior. "They made some adjustments at the end. I thought we tried to do our best every play."
Glenbard reclaimed the lead on a 72-yard scoring strike from Daver Glawe to Hiben. In the fourth quarter, Glawe's 19 yarder to a leaping Hiben in the end zone put a cap on the victory.
The Hilltoppers (10-1) scored on a two-yard scoring run by Kendall Johnson. The Griffinsfirst drive was capped by a 40-yard field goal by William Will that made it 7-3.
Glenbard struck again with an 84-yard option pass from Justice Odom to Hiben. And it was 21-3 after a 41-yard pass from Glawe-to-Hiben.
Lincoln-Way East got in the end zone on a two-yard run by lineman Kevin Bayer and a 22-yard Will field goal that cut it to 21-13. Late in the half, the Hilltoppers marched 84 yards capped by a 26-yard pass from Glawe to Burrello for a 28-13 lead.
