Boys Basketball: Tyrone Sherman powers Homewood-Flossmoor past Lincoln-Way East

Committing two quick turnovers in the opening minutes of Tuesday’s game at Lincoln-Way East, Homewood-Flossmoor’s Tyrone Sherman found himself on the bench for much of the rest of the period.
But when it counted most, the senior guard was on the court and making his presence felt, scoring 20 points in H-F’s 63-56 SouthWest Suburban Blue win.
“Coach (Jim McLaughlin) said to slow down and don’t try to beat them by myself,” Sherman said. “We needed this win for our resume so we can get a top seed in the playoffs.”
Tim Williams scored 12 points for H-F (16-6, 9-1) who rebounded from a 52-50 loss to Lockport. Jelani Yancy had 21 points for Lincoln-Way East (9-12, 2-8) with Eric Spudic and Joel Magrum adding 11 apiece.
H-F will play Bolingbrook Friday in a huge Blue game.
In a back-and-forth game into the third quarter, the Vikings trailed 43-42 following a Magrum basket off an offensive rebound.
Sherman answered with a pull-up jumper in the lane to give H-F the lead, one the Vikings would not give back. He added two free throws and another pull-up jumper as Sherman’s personal 6-0 run closed the quarter to give H-F a 48-42 advantage.
“I was trying to take it easy, and let the game come to me, help the team to the win,” Sherman said.
Lincoln-Way East drew within five points three different times in the fourth quarter but could never get over the top. After hitting 12-of-18 three-pointers in a 68-63 win over Joliet West Friday, the Griffins shot just 7-of-22 from three-point range Tuesday.
“We had some nice looks at the basket, and they just wouldn’t fall,” East coach Rich Kolimas said. “We went cold and didn’t shoot as well as we needed to beat an athletic team like that.”
