Boys basketball: Gray sparks Waubonsie Valley in rout of Lincoln-Way East

After a sluggish start to Saturday’s nonconference game against Lincoln-Way East, Waubonsie Valley’s boys basketball team needed a spark.
Senior Demetrius Gray provided just what the Warriors needed.
Waubonsie found itself tied with the Griffins early in the second quarter before Gray’s defense forced the action. A lay-up after his steal followed by a rebound putback ignited a 13-2 run that blew open a close game. Waubonsie wound up cruising to a 67-46 win.
“Any time anybody does anything big, it gets our team going,” said Waubonsie senior Jared Brownridge, who led all scorers with 20 points. “In this case, it was Dee. He got a couple of and-ones and got our team going into the second half.”
Throughout the slow start to the game, which could be attributed to Friday’s snow cancellation against South Elgin, Brownridge was the constant offensively. The Warriors broke about Lincoln-Way East’s zone with some good screens to get Brownridge open and he took full advantage.
He scored nine points in the first quarter and wound up with 16 of his 20 in the first half. He sat out the final 10 minutes of the game with the lead swelling to as many as 30heir zone kind of stymied us for a little bit, but we did a nice job of cutting it and finding the open guys,” Waubonsie coach Steve Weemer said. “Our guys did a nice job once they got in a rhythm and got loose.”
Waubonsie (13-5) forced eight turnovers in the first quarter, but Lincoln-Way East (7-9) hung tight thanks to three three-pointers off the bench from Chris DeRubertis. A Ryan Hayes free throw tied the game at 20-20 early in the second before the Warriors exploded.
They carried a 33-23 lead in the third quarter and opened with a 15-5 run, pushing the lead to 54-30 by the end of the quarter.
The big lead allowed Weemer to empty the bench. Everybody on the roster played significant minutes.
