Naperville North puts rout on Knights

The biggest factor in host No. 10 Naperville North's 5-0 victory Thursday over Lincoln-Way Central was the Huskies' 4-3 loss a day earlier to Lyons.

‘‘We definitely let [the players] know we weren't pleased with the effort they put out [against Lyons],'' Naperville North coach Brent Terada said. ‘‘And they're the kids we thought they we. They took it personally.''

Zoey Swift scored twice before being taken out for most of the second half, and Hunter Drendel, Kirsten Anderson and Maria Grygleski each added a goal to lead the Huskies at the Naperville Invitational Tournament.

‘‘There are probably eight or nine kids in this area that can change a game single-handedly and [Swift] is one of them,'' Terada. ‘‘There aren't a lot of kids I would take over her. She's the real deal, that's for sure.''

Drendel and Swift each converted on first-half penalty kicks for Naperville North (7-3). Swift scored her second goal on a shot that was too hot to handle for Knights goalie Becca Petrone (two saves) with 3:02 left in the first half to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

‘‘We just had to play our game because [the loss to Lyons] was a disaster,'' Swift said. ‘‘We knew we had to do way better than that.''

Anderson made it 4-0 with a 30-yard free kick that bounced in the six-yard box and through the hands of Petrone 55 seconds into the second half.

Grygleski scored the Huskies' fifth with 4:21 left in the second.

Nikki White came close to scoring for Lincoln-Way Central (5-5-4) when she smashed a 22-yard shot off the crossbar less then a minute after Drendel gave North a 1-0 lead.

Drendel and Jillian Van Kampen each added an assist, and Abby Green made one save for the Huskies.
