Lemont’s best score leads to tie for title

Lemont picked a good time to shatter its mark for best team score of the year.
The Indians’ 337 was good enough to tie Mother McAuley for the team title at Wednesday’s Class AA Stagg Regional at Green Garden in Frankfort.
“I’m very pleased and very surprised,” Lemont coach Bill Mondrella said. “Our best team score before today was a 360. Our top two are always consistent, but our freshman Laura Ringo stepped up and our whole team did great.”
Emily Lejman and Bridget Lynn each shot 7-over 79s to tie for fourth and pace the Indians. Ringo fired an 86, and Kara Gikas and Nicole Fardig each shot 93s.
Lockport’s Krystal Garritson dropped a tiebreaker with Sandburg’s Frankie Saban for the individual title.
Saban made a par 3 on the third playoff hole, the 12th, to capture the title as Garritson made bogey.
Garritson, nonetheless, qualified for sectionals as an individual along with her sister, Kayla, who shot an 87 to finish tied for 12th.
“I hit fairways and greens,” Krystal Garritson said, “and I made two-putts. I didn’t have any 3-putts all day. I played pretty solid all day. On nine, I hit a great drive and made a (par) four. That was a highlight.”
Lockport’s Jen Holly shot a 95 to tie for 20th and also qualified for sectionals as an individual. The Porters (364) finished fourth as a team, one spot shy of the final qualifying position that was claimed by Sandburg (345).
All the advancers from Wednesday’s regional move on to Monday’s Marist Sectional at Old Oak in Homer Glen.
“The competition is going to be really tough there,” Mondrella said. “You have to hit it straight there and we have girls that can do it. If we can shoot another 337, I’ll take that and see where it gets us.”
