Girls Basketball: Joliet Catholic tops Lemont
Joliet Catholic used dominant stretches in each half to pull away for a 44-35 victory against host Lemont in a nonconference girls basketball game.
The Angels, who had lost six of their last seven games, broke an 8-8 tie by outscoring the Indians 16-4 for a 12-point lead late in the second quarter. Shannon Butler finished the stretch with consecutive layups. The first one was part of a three-point play after a good pass from Destiny Nash-Ventir.
Butler, coming off a 21-point, 11-rebound game against Providence, finished with 13 points and nine
rebounds as Joliet Catholic improved to 3-6.
Lemont (3-7) struggled to shoot over the Angels’ zone defense. The Indians made only five of their first 17 shots before a three-point basket by Kelsey Motto late in the first half. Lemont scored only seven points in the last 12:15 of the first half.
Courtney Toth led the Indians with a season-high 20 points, nearly 11 more than her average. Her three-pointer to start the fourth quarter got Lemont back in the game at 31-26, but the Angels then went on a 13-3 stretch to seal the victory.
