LEMONT -- Once again, Lemont played like a dominant football team.
The Indians ran to a 28-0 halftime lead and ran to a 42-7 win over Shepard in their South Suburban Blue opener.
"I'm very pleased with our effort and the results," Lemont coach Eric Michaelsen said. "This was a good win on homecoming. The kids are working hard and getting some good results."
Junior halfback Danny Hayes once again led Lemont (5-0, 1-0) with 87 yards rushing on 13 carries. Senior Andrew Tomala finished with 66 on 5 carries. Tomala broke a 16-yard run for a touchdown.
Hayes has now rushed for 667 yards on 89 carries, a 7.5 per carry average. He entered Friday action as the Joliet area's No. 3 leading rusher.
"Danny's done a nice job of stepping in and getting the job done," Michaelsen said. "Danny and Andy Tomala have gives us a great one-two punch back there.
"And Tyler Burns is doing the job at fullback. He's doing a great job of blocking."
Quarterback Nick Lawrence added a 14-yard touchdown run for the Indians, who led 42-0 after three quarters.
Lemont finished with 310 yards, including 220 rushing on 30 carries, a 7.3 average. Lemont's dominant defense limited Shepard 1-4, 0-1) to 148 yards. The Astros rushed for 87 yards and passed for 61.
"I realize that this was homecoming week, but the kids kept their focus very well I thought," Michaelsen said.
"Now, we have to keep the momentum going into the season's second half. So far, we have done a good job."
