Peterson, Crown Point blow out LaPorte

CROWN POINT — Tristan Peterson had barely played this season until he started at running back for Crown Point against LaPorte.

With regular Jake Lindeman out with an ankle injury, Peterson came up with a big-time performance in Friday’s Duneland Athletic Conference game for the Bulldogs.

The sophomore rushed for 114 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns to help CP’s seniors celebrate their last homecoming game with a 42-0 win over the Slicers.

“My O-line did all the work,’’ Peterson said. “I was just running through the holes they opened for me. I just wanted to do (the job) with Jake out. This was a big game for our seniors. It was their last homecoming game. I came out tonight and played for the seniors.

“I haven’t played that much this season. I was just trying to fill in for Jake. I’d be pretty much lost out there without Jake.’’

Crown Point coach Chip Pettit had talked in the preseason about the Peterson’s potential and his upside and Peterson didn’t disappoint.

“Tristan’s a good athlete, he’s going to have a bunch of good games here before he’s done,’’ Pettit said. “I thought he he ran well tonight. He got to the holes quickly that our O-line opened for him and he took advantage of them.’’

Senior Pete Parks scored a pair of TDs for the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-3) while another senior, defensive back Logan McRae scored on a 33-yard fumble recovery on the first play of the second half.

McRae’s scoop and score — caused when CP sophomore linebacker Brendyn McKinnon stripped the ball — turned CP’s 21-0 halftime lead into a 28-0 advantage.

“We got the turnover right away in the second half and that was a big momentum-changer,’’ Pettit said.

The Bulldogs led 14-0 late in the second quarter before marching 57 yards in the final 1:48 to score another TD and take a 21-0 lead into the locker room.

Parks scored the first of his two TDs from a yard out on the final play of the half.

The Bulldogs utilized the clock well on the drive, getting off five plays in the final 21.2 seconds.

“I thought our kids did a really good job there of getting to the sidelines in a hurry-up situation and stopping the clock,’’ Pettit said.
