St. Charles East running back Wes Allen was exhausted Saturday after the host Saints’ 17-13 Class 7A first-round playoff win over Lake Zurich. It was no wonder, as Allen rushed for 187 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns.
“This is awesome, and I can’t describe it,” Allen said. “Our offensive line played a great game. We came out and played football our way and never gave up. I think that was the key. The first half we only got two possessions, and you can’t do a whole lot with that.”
Trailing 13-10 with 1:03 to go in the game, St. Charles East (8-2) took the lead for the first time on Allen’s 11-yard run. It was Allen’s second touchdown of the night.
Allen also scored with 5:20 to play in the third on a 48-yard run to cut Lake Zurich’s lead to 13-10.
‘‘I think that was [the turning point], and it put us back in the game and gave us a lot of confidence,’’ Allen said.
Max Methling’s two field goals in the second quarter gave Lake Zurich a 13-3 halftime advantage. Dan Keller’s 23-yard field goal accounted for the Saints’ first score of the game.
