Lake Station rolls over Wolves
In the second and third quarters, Lake Station hit 14 of 21 attempts from the floor, allowing the Eagles to pull away from Boone Grove for a 65-45 win.
"Every team plays better and every coach looks better when your team is shooting it that well," Lake Station (13-5, 2-5 GSSC) coach Bryon Clouse said. "That shooting was kind of contagious tonight."
The visiting Wolves (1-17, 1-6 PCC) started the game by working the ball inside to Lukas Kemp, who consistently found ways to generate points, keeping the score tight for much of the first half.
"When we had a chance with the ball, I thought we did OK on the offensive end," Boone Grove coach Matt McKay said. "They weren't shooting that well early on, but we started giving up too many second chance opportunities."
Midway through the second quarter, Kris Suleski entered the game for the Eagles and provided the spark that propelled Lake Station through the rest of the game.
The 5-foot-8 junior quickly netted a hat trick of 3-pointers, closing the half with a 9-0 Eagles run and putting the hosts up 29-19 at the break.
"That's probably the reason we won the game," said Clouse, "Kris getting us up by 10 points at the half and maybe that had Boone Grove hanging their heads a bit because it definitely pumped our guys up."
Added McKay: "He really went off on us. Their whole team caught fire in the second quarter, but (Suleski) was unbelievable."
Lake Station continued to pull away in the third quarter, thanks to an 8-of-10 performance from the floor. To open the fourth quarter, a trio of 3-pointers from Ricky Garcia, Dwayne Haden and Dean Flores moved the Eagles ahead 59-35 - their biggest lead of the game - and quelled any thoughts of a Boone Grove comeback.
While their offense rolled, the Eagles made enough plays on defense to keep the Wolves at bay.
The Eagles hit 50 percent (24-for-48) of their field goal attempts in the game, including 56 percent (10-for-18) on 3-pointers. Dean Flores had a game-high 16 points for Lake Station, while Kemp finished with 14 points for Boone Grove.
