LAKE STATION -- When a team fumbles the opening kickoff on Halloween night, it definitely sends a chill up your back with a message: This isn't going to be good.
Unfortunately for Lake Station, the Eagles fumbled on their own 38 to start the game giving the South Newton Rebels good field position to start the game.
The Rebels (8-3) only needed four plays to capitalize on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Lowe to Curt Roberts for their first score in a game they went on to win 48-0.
"Well that happens to freshmen players," said Eagles coach Tim McCormick of his team's early problems. "We lost five (players) in two days, we just ran out of bodies."
On the Rebels' next possession, running back Jace Snodgrass bulldozed his way 30 yards for their second touchdown, capping off another four-play drive. Snodgrass rushed for 88 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns against the depleted Eagles' defense.
It didn't get any easier for the Eagles (2-9), who were playing down three starters.
Lowe and the Rebels' air attack continued to stay hot, finding Trent Alenduff for a 16-yard touchdown. Lowe finished 6-of-9 for 87 yards and three touchdowns.
The Rebels continued to overwhelm the Eagles as they scored two more times before halftime. Kody Wilson scrambled for a 12-yard touchdown and with six seconds remaining Lowe hooked up with Luke Welsh for 3 yards giving them a commanding 35-0 halftime lead.
To make things worse for the Eagles, their only offensive threat, Kristopher Klimek, was forced to leave the field by the official when Klimek was visibly dizzy with 6:23 remaining in the half. Klimek didn't return, finishing with 51 total yards on 16 touches.
"I spent seven days in the hospital for this," said Klimek of a neck injury that kept him out of two games. "It just hurt, for all our seniors it just hurt."
The Eagles only managed to 38 rushing yards and 43 yards passing, while the Rebels piled up 334 total yards.
