The stakes are going up soon for the Montini girls basketball team.
The No. 3 Broncos coasted to their third consecutive win at the Geneva Invitational Friday, rolling past Lakes 78-24 to set up a title game matchup against the host Vikings at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
"We have a lot of speed," Montini coach Jason Nichols said. "I just don't know if we're smart [enough]. We're going to find out in a hurry against Geneva and [Downstate powerhouse] Edwardsville [in a shootout]."
Reigning Class 3A champion Montini (3-0) took a 20-5 lead after one quarter and were up 36-13 at the half.
Notre Dame-bound guard Whitney Holloway led the Broncos with 21 points. North Carolina recruit Whitney Adams scored 13, and sophomore Nikia Edom scored 10 off the bench. Sophomore Terese McMahon scored six points for Lakes.
"I definitely think this team can be as good as last year's," Holloway said. "But this is a different team, but overall, it is much quicker.
"One of the things that I liked about Notre Dame, is that it is only two hours from home and I want my family to have a chance to see me play. But the big thing is that I know a degree from Notre Dame will take me somewhere."
