Lakes gets past Zion-Benton

The Lakes Eagles used two long marches to secure a 14-7 win over the

visiting Zion-Benton Zee-Bees in a rare North Suburban Conference crossover

victory for the Prairie Division over the Lake.

The back-breaking second TD of the game for Lakes came following a 10-play,

82-yard drive with 1:53 left in the contest. Tight end Mike Beckman fell on

a fumble in the end zone for the Eagles following a three-yard run. Sophomore

back Direll Clark (95 yards on 15 carries) was big on the drive with runs of

12 and 32 yards. Clark left the game with an injury prior to the score.

The Bees did not reach the end zone until 39 seconds remained in the game

when Cole Urban completed a 54-yard march on a 6-yard pass to Lucas

Hemenway.

The Eagles seized the lead on their first possession of the game, marching

methodically down the field and eventually scoring on a three-yard plunge up

the gut by junior Michael Pfeiffer. The Eagles used 18 plays and went 78

yards before crossing the goal line on a drive that took most of the first

quarter and concluded in the early part of the second.

Lakes is now 4-1, while Zion falls to 0-5.

With ace running back James Zell still out of action with a bad knee, Lakes

utilized four different running backs on the long drive.

Lakes dominated offensively throughout the first half running twice as many

plays as their opponent (40 to 20) and racking up 131 yards of offense while

holding the Zee-Bees to just 42.

The Bees could get nothing done on the ground or in the air. After

completing his first three passes, Zion quarterback Cole Urban threw six

incomplete passes and an interception as four drives failed to produce a

first down.
