This has been a record-breaking season for Lakes High School’s boys soccer program.

Earlier this month, senior Jonathan Stanley broke the team record for career goals when he tallied for the 40th time.

Then, on Tuesday, Stanley’s teammate, Scott Brugioni, set a team single-season record for assists (16) when he set up Lucas Istavanek for the third goal in the Eagles’ 4-0 rout of Richmond in the semifinals of the IHSA Antioch Regional tournament for smaller schools.

Friday, Lakes will try to win its fourth straight regional title when it faces either Antioch or Johnsburg at 4 o’clock.

Tuesday’s match was one-sided. Lakes goalie Will Hill did make four saves, but the Eagles put a dozen shots on frame, with four finding the twine.

“It was a good win,” said Lakes coach Kevin Kullby. “The kids played very well. We had good possession. It just took us a while to break the ice.”

The first goal was by Istavanek in the 25th minute. He took a feed from Stanley, cut across the box and fired into the corner of the net.

Four minutes later, Stanley scored his 21st of the season, taking a pass from Istavanek at the top of the box and driving to the frame.

In the second half, Brugioni’s corner kick went to Istavanek, who scored in the 47th minute, and Trevor Ray completed the rout in the 67th minute.

“Friday will be another (tougher) thing. We’ll see what happens tomorrow,” said Kullby. “We’re a little worried about Johnsburg. There are some very good players who’ve put up some very good numbers for them. They’ve held their own against some very good teams.”

Lakes is now 12-9-1 on the season, although the loss total is inflated due to playing rugged big-school competition. Richmond finished 3-14-5.
